Packing a camera kit that does not rattle

Small hard objects are the worst passengers in any bag. How we lay out an interior, and how to lay out yours.

Packing a camera kit that does not rattle

A camera kit is a dozen small, hard, expensive things. Put them loose in a bag and they spend the day grinding against each other; by the end of a season the lens is hazed and the mounts are rounded. Everything below is the reasoning behind the cut hollows in our cases, which you can apply to any bag you already own.

One hollow, one object

The rule we design to. A compartment that holds two things holds neither of them still. If you are packing a generic bag, make the dividers tight enough that nothing shifts when you tip the bag on its side — that is the test.

Lenses and domes first

Anything with glass or a clear dome goes in a dedicated pocket with nothing hard touching it. A zip slider will scratch a dome in a single journey.

Cells away from metal

Spare batteries should never share a pocket with keys, coins or mounting screws. A shorted contact is a ruined cell at best.

Cables are a planning problem

Roll them, do not fold them, and give them their own lidded space. A loose cable finds its way around everything else in the bag and turns a two-minute setup into a five-minute untangle.

Label the identical ones

Three identical black cells, two of them flat. A strip of tape and a marker saves more time on a trip than any accessory we sell.

Pack by how fast you need it

The camera and one mount go where you can reach them without putting the bag down. Spares, charger and cleaning cloth go underneath. If you have to unpack to film, you will stop filming.

Leave the kit packed

The cases that stay organised are the ones that double as storage at home. If everything has a hollow, putting it away is the same motion as packing, and you never arrive somewhere missing a mount.

What to check before you leave

Cells charged and in their slots, card in the camera, one spare mount, cloth, cable. Five things. Our larger cases are laid out so that a glance at the open lid tells you whether any of them is missing.
